NAA .22 mini revolver?
http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/naa_mini_22lr.jpg
Now that I have a good .22 rifle, I'm thinking about a handgun that can use the same .22LR ammo. In researching the many fine choices out there, I keep coming back to these tiny revolvers. Does anyone here have experience with these? The smallest LR model is only 4" long and 4.5 oz. One reason I haven't applied for a Florida CCW is because how do you carry concealed wearing shorts and a t-shirt? But this baby is the size of a small pocket knife and could go anywhere. I also worry about my wife. She likes to spend hours browsing thrift stores, and these are not always in the nicest neighborhoods. Several times she has been approached by panhandlers, crazies, and other unsavory types. I just wonder if this might be a good solution - something we could carry 24/7 that would give us a decent option if we run into trouble. If the mini is too small for my hand, I could move up to the Black Widow: http://www.chuckhawks.com/naa_black_widow.jpg They even make a holster grip that locks open like a switchblade: http://www.impactguns.com/store/medi...in_holster.jpg They also come in .22 Magnum. |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I like the .22. People put them down a lot but I'd much rather get punched in the nose by Mike Tyson than shot with a 22.

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I wholeheartedly endorse them. My advice to you....stay away from the 22 mags. They are a little tough to handle. Also, the folding grip is a pain to use, it is slow to deploy. The last thing you want to do, is fumble with it and get shot for your trouble. Besides, the grip makes the gun almost as big as a 380 to conceal, and takes away from the smallness that makes these little guns more viable to conceal.
One other thing, go for the 1 5/8ths barrel over the shortest one. It makes a difference in the accuracy, and the extra half inch is no worse to conceal. Lastly, replace the wood grips with the rubber panels they offer. It makes it a lot easier to hang on to it. I look for jeans that have a deeper watch pocket than the usual fare, and I carry mine in the watch pocket. Believe me, they do not print at all in there, and are easy to deploy. |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
So you think the 1 5/8" LR mini with rubber grips is the minimum effective configuration? That sounds about right from what I've learned reading the NAA forum. Some there feel the mini is only accurate enough for a "get off me" gun, while others talk about putting all 5 shots in a pie plate at 25 yards. I suppose it depends on hand size, grips, experience, etc.

25 yards is like a mile when shooting a pistol with a barrel less than 4 inches IMO but im no expert.....im just talkin from my little experience |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I have the holster grip. I like it because it is much easier to aim and hold. Folded it fits in the pocket-watch pocket of my jeans! (With the belt clip removed)

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I still think people would be better off with one of the small .380 autos, like the Keltec P3AT the the Diamondback DB380. That said, I can appreciate the reliability of a revolver. Perhaps the Ruger LCR in .38 Spl?
I just can't get over the idea of .22LR as a defensive weapon, yes I know it's better than no gun. What do these NAA's retail for? |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
Maybe it was 25 feet - that seems more reasonable. At 25 yards you should be running away from trouble, anyway. The minis are for when all other options are off the table.
I do have a cheap Raven Arms .25 auto that I haven't shot in 20 years. In fact, I bought it for one, single dangerous occasion, then put it away. |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I think you're right about 25 feet vs yards.
I can hit a squirrel with my Taurus Pt-22 up to 8 yards (24 feet) even with a long trigger pull and 2 3/4" barrel. Beyond that the shots go off. I figure a badguys brain isn't too much smaller than a squirrel's brain. Quote:

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I have both the .22 and the slightly larger .22 Magnum. Surprisingly I've found that, at least for me, the .22 is slightly more accurate (target roughly 20 feet away) and has never failed to fire. I've had at least two misfire with the .22 Magnum.
In the pocket holster the .22 is about the same size as a small wallet. One thing with the .22 magnum is that if you do miss you'll probably have them on the run from the noise of the blast. Thing sounds like a .357 going off. Turns heads at the range when people hear that blast and can barely see what you're holding. Definite conversation starter. |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
Ifg you have a pocket to put the NAA in the you can carry a real SD caliber, the S&W 340 revolver will easily drop in pocket or purse. A 22 would be my absolute last option to carry for SD...I would hard put not to pull a knife before I pulled a NAA 22. Nothing wrong with the gun...they work well they just are worth considering for SD purposes...they are range toys or at best a BUG for a BUG.

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
i did a thread on these that got good info/responses, but can't get the search to work right.
wholeheartedly recommend but as a backup; got it all the time- any work [don't have to worry about hitting it & it firing- if cylinder is properly locked]. only problem i had was misfires due to too much sweating... i now have it in a baggie & cell phone holder. practice firing, different ways of holding/firing for accuracy. also do not put finger near cylinder ; mine was numb for 10 min. i often carry a keltec 380 additionally. |

This is what I carry almost all of the time because of the ease.
Bought a little open top pouch at the Army/Navy store and it fits into any pocket quite easily without a print. Sport Jacket to back pocket of jeans...no problem I'm able to put all of the rounds in a pie plate at about 10 yards. Haven't tried any farther distances. To do so, however, I had to file down the front blade sight. Prior to that I was putting all rounds into the dirt in front of the target. This also made the little piece easier to get out of pouch/pocket. Deployment has been no problem with the fold down grip. Re-folding is a bit slower since a button does have to be pushed to release it to fold back up. I haven't had any FTF's with the 22 mags I've been using, but I haven't fired all that many rounds through it. Sure, a .45 would be better, but this is (IMHO) better than a sharp stick...and a lot louder! |

I'm stocked-up on Winchester 22 mag HP's Suppose there's an inherent problem with using magnums in these which I haven't encountered ...yet? |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
Somebody said they change out their ammo every few days because of the moisture problem. Seems like it wouldn't be an issue with a decent holster.

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I just went outside and ran 10 shots through mine. :) Thanks for the reminder. It really has quite a flash at dusk!

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
I used to have one, the smallest one. Mine was made 20 years ago and was an excellent piece of work. They are pretty useless. If you're trapping varmints to eradicate them rather than harvest pelts, the little NAA is perfect. They are no good for defense because they are single action, clumsy to hold or press into action quickly. No trigger guard. If you cock the hammer and need to uncock it, you have to use both hands. Putting the hammer in the little safety notch between chambers is tricky.
There are several ways you can shoot your kneecap with one of these little things. |

Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
As many have already said, there are many better self defense options out there. At a minimum I consider mine a BUG/novelty at best. I have been able to conceal it in pockets that would be hard pressed to fit my 340PD or PM9 so as with all my guns (before I sold them), I like having the extra (golf club) options.
FWIW, there was a guy in Enterprise Al a number of years ago who waxed two perps with his NAA .22 black widow. They had apparently assaulted him and his two young children as they were walking to their car in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I guess for him it was enough gun. BTW, if you are set on getting one, I would recommend the .22 Mag/LR version as you can easily switch between the cylinders. If nothing else, the .22 Mag snake shot is a handy load when hiking in serpent country. Bx3 |
Re: NAA .22 mini revolver?
Just buy one for the fun of it. We can argue all day on what gun is the "ideal" BUG, but sometimes it is fun to own a nifty little gun. It is safe, well-built, and relatively inexpensive. Just get one, but don't rely on it to save your life... unless you have to. ;)
